Fragaria vesca

Wild Alpine Strawberry is a charming, compact perennial treasured for its intensely fragrant, small red berries and delicate white spring flowers. Unlike traditional garden strawberries, alpine types do not produce runners, forming neat clumps that are perfect for edging, containers, woodland gardens, and edible landscapes.

The tiny berries are exceptionally sweet and aromatic — often considered more flavourful than larger commercial varieties — making them a true garden delicacy.

Planting Instructions

Alpine strawberries benefit from light and cool conditions for best germination.

Cold Stratification:

  • Place seeds in slightly damp medium in the refrigerator for 2–3 weeks before sowing
  • Alternatively, sow outdoors in late fall for natural stratification

Indoor Sowing:

  • Start seeds 8–10 weeks before last frost
  • Surface sow, press gently into soil (do not cover — needs light)
  • Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy
  • Maintain temperatures of 18–22 °C
  • Germination: 14–28 days

Transplant outdoors after hardening off once frost danger has passed.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade (prefers afternoon shade in hotter climates)
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with organic matter
  • Water: Consistent moisture; do not allow to dry out completely
  • Height: 6–8 inches (15–20 cm)
  • Spread: 8–12 inches
  • Days to Harvest: Approximately 110–120 days
  • Harvest Season: Early summer through fall
  • Growth Habit: Clump-forming perennial (no runners)
  • Hardiness: Zones 3–9
