Borago officinalis var. alba

White Borage is a beautiful and uncommon form of traditional blue borage, featuring the same star-shaped flowers - but in soft, luminous white. With its silvery-green, fuzzy foliage and nectar-rich blooms, this fast-growing annual is a magnet for bees and beneficial insects.

Just like the blue form, both the leaves and flowers have a mild cucumber flavour and are edible, making White Borage a charming addition to herb gardens, pollinator patches, and edible landscapes.

Planting Instructions

Direct Sowing:

  • Sow outdoors after last frost
  • Plant seeds ½ inch deep
  • Space plants 12–18 inches apart
  • Keep soil evenly moist during germination
  • Germination: 5–10 days

Borage develops a taproot and prefers not to be transplanted, so direct sowing is best.

Indoor Sowing:

  • Start in pots 3–4 weeks before last frost
  • Transplant carefully to avoid root disturbance

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to light partial shade
  • Soil: Well-drained soil; tolerates average to poor soils
  • Water: Moderate; drought tolerant once established
  • Height: 18–36 inches (45–90 cm)
  • Spread: 12–24 inches
  • Days to Bloom: Approximately 50–60 days from seed
  • Bloom Time: Early summer through fall
  • Self-Seeding: May readily self-seed if flowers are allowed to mature

Garden & Culinary Uses

  • Outstanding pollinator plant
  • Companion plant for tomatoes and strawberries
  • Edible flowers for salads, desserts, and beverages
  • Lovely addition to white or moon gardens

White Borage offers all the benefits of traditional borage with a refined, elegant twist - a striking yet practical herb for ornamental and edible gardens alike.
