Pansy (Viola × wittrockiana)

Pansies are cheerful, cool-season annuals or short-lived perennials known for their wide variety of vibrant colors and distinctive "faces." These compact flowers bloom in early spring and fall, often with velvety petals in combinations of purple, yellow, white, blue, and maroon. They’re perfect for garden borders, containers, window boxes, and hanging baskets. Pansies are not only ornamental but also edible—making charming additions to salads or desserts.

Planting Instructions:

  • When to Plant:

    • Indoors: Start seeds 10–12 weeks before the last frost.

    • Outdoors: Direct sow in early spring or late summer for fall blooms.

  • Sowing Depth: 1/8 inch (lightly cover with soil or vermiculite).

  • Spacing: 6–8 inches apart.

  • Germination: 10–21 days at 65–75°F (18–24°C).

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade (prefers cooler temps).

  • Soil: Moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; don’t allow soil to completely dry out.

  • Fertilizer: Use a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer every 4–6 weeks.

Tip: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering. In warmer regions, pansies thrive in winter and early spring, while in cooler climates, they're best planted in early spring and fall.
