Also known as: Morelle de Balbis, Fire-and-Ice Tomato, or Thorned Tomato.

Litchi Tomato is a unique heirloom plant related to tomatoes and eggplants. It produces small, cherry-sized red fruits with a glossy finish, encased in a spiny husk. Despite its name, the fruit tastes more like a tart cherry tomato with a hint of sweetness of a lychee. The plant itself is highly ornamental, with jagged, deep-green leaves and lots of thorns, making it an effective deer deterrent in the garden.

Plant Features:

  • Height: 3–5 ft (90–150 cm)

  • Spread: 3 ft (90 cm)

  • Days to Maturity: 90–100 days

  • Fruit: Small red, slightly sweet, cherry-like tomatoes

  • Note: Entire plant is thorny—handle with care!

Planting Instructions:

  • Start Indoors: 6–8 weeks before last frost

  • Soil: Well-draining, rich soil

  • Germination: 7–14 days at 21–26°C (70–80°F)

  • Transplant: After danger of frost has passed, in full sun

  • Spacing: 24–36 in (60–90 cm) apart

  • Watering: Regular, but avoid waterlogging

  • Support: Provide staking or caging if needed

  • Harvest: When fruits are deep red and slightly soft to touch—carefully remove husks

Tips:

  • Use gloves when harvesting due to the plant’s spines.

  • Avoid overwatering once established.

  • Fruits can be eaten fresh, used in sauces, or preserved.

  • Needs more than one plant to cross pollinate.
