Kumato tomatoes are a unique variety known for their rich, dark brown to deep reddish-green colour. They have a sweet yet slightly tart flavor, with a juicy and firm texture. These tomatoes are highly resistant to cracking and have a longer shelf life than many other varieties. Originally developed in Spain, they thrive in various growing conditions and produce medium-sized fruits, typically around 2-3 ounces each.
Planting Instructions:
- Starting Seeds Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use a well-draining seed-starting mix and plant seeds ¼ inch deep. Keep soil consistently moist and maintain a temperature of 70–80°F (21–27°C) for optimal germination. Seedlings typically sprout within 7–14 days.
- Transplanting: Once seedlings have at least two sets of true leaves and nighttime temperatures are above 50°F (10°C), harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. Transplant into well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny location, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart.
- Growing Conditions: Soil: Prefers rich, loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–6.8. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Support: Use stakes or cages to support the plants as they grow. Fertilization: Apply a balanced tomato fertilizer every few weeks to encourage strong growth and fruit production.
- Harvesting: Kumato tomatoes take about 70–80 days to mature. Harvest when the fruits are fully colored, firm, and slightly soft to the touch. These tomatoes continue to ripen after picking and have excellent storage capabilities. Enjoy Kumato tomatoes fresh in salads, sandwiches, or cooked into flavorful sauces!
